Welcome to this week’s final Best In Show with “Harlem/Cold Baloney” from Bill Withers. This was his encore song from Live at Carnegie Hall recorded on Oct 6th, 1972. Known as one of the best concert recordings from the 1970s, it capitalizes on Withers’ trademark melancholy soul sound while expanding the music to fit the room granted by a live show. Bill Withers passed away last week on March 30th. Withers won three Grammy Awards and was nominated for six more. His life was the subject of the 2009 documentary film Still Bill. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. Withers worked as a professional musician for just 15 years, from 1970 to 1985, after which he moved on to other occupations. A fitting song to end this feature.
