radio Unleashed listeners: A little context about this week’s show. Once a year I do a radio show that is a fundraiser for one person. This week’s show is for Jayne Giese. She passed away in late 2012 from breast cancer at the age of 46. She left behind two kids, treat now 14 and 12, and her husband George. Jayne was first diagnosed with stage four breast cancer six years earlier. Over the course of those six years she exhibited unbelievable strength, character, grit, refusing to let cancer define her or inhibit her. Her battle was truly a wonder of courage, and an amazing display of the human spirit. People do not typically get 6 years after a Stage 4 diagnosis without incredible care and support. Dana Farber was that for Jayne. Anyone who knows anything about cancer also knows that early detection is the key to sustaining life and preventing bad outcomes.

To honor Jayne’s memory in a constructive way, some of my college buddies are riding the Pan Mass Challenge – 111 miles from Sturbridge in western Mass to Cape Cod this coming weekend, and all money raised will go directly to funding a Dana Farber mammography van that provides cancer screenings to women in Boston and New England who might not otherwise have the means – time or finances – to get screened. This is more than an ounce of prevention. For some this is a cure, a life-saver. More importantly, it just feels like something Jayne would do herself.
